What Surveillance Devices Look Like: IAC’s Practical Detection Experience

One of the most popular Google queries is “what does a listening device look like” or “what does a hidden camera look like.” People want to understand what exactly they should be looking for if they suspect surveillance.

The same question regularly appears on social media as well. Posts with our real findings often get tens of thousands of views, because most people have never seen actual covert surveillance devices.

The IAC team has been professionally searching for listening devices in apartments, offices, and vehicles for more than 7 years. During this time, we have checked hundreds of locations and found dozens of different types of devices used for covert audio and video surveillance.

In this article, we summarize our practical detection experience and show what surveillance devices actually look like when specialists discover them during professional inspections.

What Surveillance Devices Look Like Indoors (Apartments and Offices)

During inspections of residential and office premises, two main types of covert surveillance devices are found most often:

  • devices for covert audio recording,
  • hidden video cameras.

Most modern covert devices are small in size, which makes them easy to disguise among ordinary objects.

1. GSM Listening Device

One of the most common types of devices is the GSM bug.

These are small electronic devices that contain:

  • a microphone,
  • a GSM module,
  • a SIM card,
  • an antenna,
  • a power source.

The operating principle is simple: the device answers a call from the person who installed it and transmits sound from the room in real time.

Another operating mode is automatic activation when sound appears. In that case, the device independently calls a preset number or starts transmitting audio.

Such devices usually:

  • are a few centimeters in size,
  • can be disguised as power supplies, extension cords, or electronic modules,
  • are installed in outlets, furniture, appliances, or behind decorative elements.

2. Voice Recorders for Covert Recording

Another common type of finding is miniature digital voice recorders.
They are designed for autonomous recording of conversations without signal transmission.

Such devices:

  • have built-in memory,
  • can record from several hours to several days,
  • are activated by a timer or when sound appears.

Their advantage is the complete absence of a radio signal, which makes them difficult to detect without specialized equipment.

3. Hidden Video Cameras

Hidden surveillance cameras are also sometimes found during inspections.

They can:

  • transmit video via Wi-Fi or GSM
  • record video to a memory card
  • operate in motion detection mode

Modern cameras are often disguised as:

  • alarm sensors
  • chargers
  • power adapters
  • interior items

Because of their miniature size, the lens may be less than one millimeter, making it almost invisible to the naked eye.

What Surveillance Devices Look Like in a Vehicle

In vehicles, we most often find devices for tracking movement or combined audio surveillance devices.

1. GPS Trackers

The most common finding during vehicle inspections is GPS trackers. These are devices that allow a vehicle’s movement to be tracked in real time.

Main elements of a GPS tracker:

  • a GPS module (coordinate detection),
  • a GSM module (data transmission) with a SIM card,
  • a microprocessor that controls all other elements, processes information, and transmits it to a remote server,
  • a battery.

Many models have a magnetic casing, which allows the device to be quickly mounted on metal parts of the vehicle body.

Most often, such devices are installed:

  • under the vehicle floor,
  • in wheel arches,
  • behind the bumper,
  • inside body elements,
  • under the seats.

2. Tracking Tags (AirTag, SmartTag)

A separate category consists of consumer item-finding trackers that are sometimes used for surveillance.

The best-known examples are:

  • Apple AirTag,
  • Samsung SmartTag,
  • Xiaomi tags.

These devices are about the size of a coin, so they are easy to hide in a vehicle. They work through the smartphone ecosystem, transmitting location information through other nearby devices.

3. Audio Surveillance Devices in Vehicles

The second most common finding in vehicles is devices used to listen inside the cabin.

These may include:

  • GSM microphones with online data transmission,
  • miniature voice recorders,
  • combined GSM devices with a microphone and tracker.

Such devices are usually installed:

  • under seats,
  • in the center console,
  • inside interior trim panels,
  • in the ceiling,
  • in headrests,

In practice, they can be placed in almost any part of the cabin where there is enough space for covert installation and an opportunity to capture conversations clearly.

Conclusion

Covert devices used for listening and surveillance can look very different — which is exactly why their detection requires a comprehensive approach and the use of specialized equipment.

The IAC team conducts professional inspections of vehicles, apartments, and offices for listening devices, GPS trackers, and hidden cameras using a set of modern detection methods.

If you suspect possible surveillance, it is better to have it checked professionally.
