Recently, we conducted a technical inspection of a client’s office and discovered a covert listening device concealed inside a working printer. The device consisted of:
– an external microphone;
– a signal conversion board;
– an intermediate data storage unit (SD card);
– an autonomous power supply unit.
A 4G modem was used for data transmission, while a GSM relay enabled remote activation and deactivation of the device.
The system allowed the operator to:
– discreetly record conversations within the premises;
– store recordings on the SD card;
– transmit data remotely via mobile internet;
– operate autonomously (without connection to the main power supply) and “come to life” only when needed.
Solutions of this kind are designed for long-term covert operation. Office equipment – something people are accustomed to and rarely perceive as a potential risk – often becomes a convenient concealment point. If your office hosts negotiations or discussions involving finances, contracts, strategy, or personal data, regular technical sweeps for covert surveillance devices should be considered a standard security measure.
